Selected as Victoria’s Centenary of Federation floral emblem in 2001, Acacia 'Scarlet Blaze' is a unique ornamental form of Cinnamon Wattle. This common name reflects the lovely fragrance released when the leaves are crushed during warm weather. ‘Scarlet Blaze’ was a chance discovery made by bushwalkers in the Black Range State Forest, north east of Melbourne back in 1995. From one mutant seedling, the selection was adopted and successfully propagated by the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, with the objective of conserving this important native finding. When in bloom 'Scarlet Blaze' rewards with a bright display of striking blood-red flowers. The parent plant in the bush has long since perished but the two original cuttings of 'Scarlet Blaze' have gone on to produce every plant in existence, and which are now spread across the country in home gardens, public parks and gardens and botanical collections. Select a position in full sun to dappled shade in a well drained, moist soil. A hardy plant, it will tolerate frost and short periods of dryness although occasional deep watering is recommended through extended periods of drought. No pruning generally required.
